Tourist Information about Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago, affectionately called "T & T" by the locals, is located at the southernmost part of the West Indies. Trinidad was once connected to Venezuela during pre-historic times, as it lies almost seven miles from the Paria Peninsula.

The Spanish founded Trinidad in 1592 while the English settled Tobago in 1642. They later captured Trinidad in 1797. Until the country declared its independence in 1962, they remained in British hands. Although it is one of the most prosperous countries in the Caribbean due to natural gas production and oil, Trinidad and Tobago still struggle with pollution and poverty.

These two islands, while close together, have two very distinct and different personalities. Trinidad holds an outgoing, fun-loving, island persona while Tobago is often seen as its much quieter counterpart. Trinidad is known as the birthplace of the limbo dance, steel drum music, and the calypso. It is seen as a great tourist destination because of its enjoyable local culture and energetic nightlife. Tobago, on the other hand, offers natural attractions such as diving and snorkeling spots, forest preserves, and beautiful beaches.
