Qatar, important visitor information

Currency : The Qatari Riyal is the city's official currency and is valued at a rate of 3.65 riyal to a US dollar. Money can be exchanged in banks and foreign exchange bureaus located in the airports. Banks open in the mornings and are closed on Fridays and Saturdays. ATMs are widespread in the city and most international credit cards are accepted in major restaurants and establishments

Language : Arabic is the official language in Qatar although English is widely used throughout the city.

Customs : Taxi drivers do not expect a tip and a standard rate of 10% is applied as service fees in most restaurants although if it is not present in the bill tipping is much appreciated.

No vaccinations are needed to enter Qatar although diarrhea is a big risk in this city so travelers are encouraged to watch what they eat and drink. As a precaution, visitors should drink bottled water and avoid under-cooked food and unwashed produce.

Qatar is an Islamic state where drinking alcohol is illegal except in duly licensed hotels, restaurants and bars. Public intimacy is an offense where the offenders can be arrested and homosexuality is likewise illegal.

Safety : Most visits to the city are uneventful, but like any other city in the Gulf Qatar is at a high risk of being attacked be terrorists, Visitors are then advised to be vigilant.

Despite the low crime rate women are still advised to be careful when traveling alone, especially at night.
