Thaipusam Festival
Celebrated every January by Hindus making a pilgrimage to the Batu Caves in Selangor. The festival commemorates both the birthday of Lord Murugan (also Subramaniam), the youngest son of Shiva and Parvati, and the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a vel (lance) so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadam. Devotees follow a silver chariot carrying the statue of Lord Muruga which wends its way through KL to arrive at Batu Caves.
Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year falls in February and festivities are held nationwide. It is more widely celebrated though in Penang. The Chingay parade adds to the festive atmosphere with stilt walkers, lion and dragon dances, acrobats, and dozens of decorated floats taking to the streets amidst the clashing of cymbals and beating of gongs and drums.
Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix
From the 21 st to the 23 rd of March, the Sepang International Circuit plays host to one of Malaysia's premier event the Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix. It is an action packed weekend of race activity with competitors coming from all over the world.
Wesak Day
This is the most important day of the Buddhist Calendar as it marks the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha. Buddhist devotees will gather in temples throughout the country to release doves and to offer prayers. Wesak is also an occasion to offer alms to monks and give free meals to the needy.
