Independence Day
Celebrated in June 17, this is the largest nationwide festival in Iceland. It is a time of colourful parades, music, theatre, and dancing on the streets.
Sjómannadagurinn
Observed in the first week of June, this event is held in honour of the seafarers. Activities in this event include swimming contests, tugs-of-war, and sea rescues.
Midsummer
Held in June 24, it is said that the Midsummer Night's dew possesses healing powers and that it is necessary to roll in it naked to cure 19 different health problems.
Sumardagurinn Fyrsti
Celebrated in the third Thursday in April, this is a carnival-style celebration to mark the onset of summer.
Pjóðhátíð
Held in August as a local feast, this is an earth-shaking event where bonfires, outdoor camping, dancing, singing, eating, and getting very drunk is the name of the game.
Verslunarmannahelgi
Also in August, the Verslunarmannahelgi is celebrated with barbecues, horse competitions, camping, family reunions, and drinking.
