Climate There are two distinct seasons, rainy and dry. Late December to mid-April dry season is the most pleasant, but it is also swarming with people and quite costly.
Entry Requirements A passport is needed for U.S. citizents (as of March 2003). Visas are not necessary. Health The risk of Malaria ( Plasmodium vivax ) is prevalent throughout the year especially in the cantons of Matina, Los Chiles (Alajuela province) and Talamanca (Limón province). There have been several cases of Dengue fever in the areas of Puntarenas and Guanacaste on the Pacific Coast , Limón on the Atlantic Coast and the Central Valley around the capital, San José . Travellers are advised to take extra precaution in protecting themselves against mosquito bites, by using repellents and by wearing sleeved shirts and long trousers. With regard to drinking water, when done outside main cities and towns, sterilization is advised since contamination is likely. Bottled water is available and is best consumed during the first few weeks of the stay.
