Copa del Caféa week-long tennis tournament, draws an international collection of talented teenagers celebrtae don January. Carrera de la Paza footrace held in March, where a thousand people run from San José's National Gymnasium to the campus of the University for Peace in Villa Colón. National Orchid Showa weekend-long festival, held in the Colegio de Medicos y Cirujanos headquarters in Sabana Sur every March features more than 500 species of orchids.
National Oxcart Daycelebrated on the second Sunday of March, it features the boyero (oxcart driver) and the carreta (the wooden-wheeled painted cart); the hub for the celebration is in San Antonio de Escazú outside of San José . Independence DayOn Sept. 15 ( 6 pm ), the Freedom Torch, relayed by a chain of student runners stretching all the way from Guatemala , arrives in San José , and Ticos join in singing the national anthem. Schoolchildren march in farole (lantern) parades, bringing handmade lanterns along the route.
