Climate

China has an eclectic climate - tropical to desert weather depending on which part of China you are in. Thick garments and thermal under wears should be prepared during winter, as well as warm weather clothing during summers. The Chinese people are generally conservative when it comes to clothing.

Language

English and Putonghua , the official language of China, are the languages Chinese use in business. Putonghua is the language used in the street so tourists will have difficulties conversing with locals if they do not know how to speak Putonghua.

Currency

Renminbi Yuan (RMBY or ¥ ) is the currency used in the country. One yuan is equal to 10 chiao/jiao which is the same as 100 fen. Tourists can exchange travelers cheques at the Bank of China. Establishments in mainland China accept major credit cards.

Tipping

Chinese people do not practice tipping and usually do not expect to receive tips from tourists. If you choose to do so, tipping should be done before the service is rendered, and not after.
