Cambodia, main attractions

After the textile industry, tourism is the next major contributor to Cambodia's recovering economy. Tourist hotspots include the following:

Angkor Wat

The Angkor Wat temple complex is the best remaining example of Khmer Architecture. Angkor Wat's literal meaning is temple city.

Royal Palace

This palace can be found in Phnom Penh. It was built on the site of a fortress in 1813. Its grounds contain several buildings that served various purposes from residence and coronation of Kings to a venue for traditional ceremonies and dance performances.

Tuol Sleng Museum

This was formerly a school converted by Pol Pot's security force into a prison. It was known as Security Prison 21 (S-21) and was the largest center of detention and torture in the country. This same prison was turned into a museum which serves as a testament to the Khmer Rouge's barbarism.

Killing Fields of Choeung Ek

This killing field is located 15 km. from Central Phnom Penh. This one-time orchard is where one can see over 8,000 skulls of victims of torture by the Khmer Rouge.
